The Yashasvi Jaiswal-Asitha Fernando altercation has become a major topic of debate in the ongoing second Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC), Colombo.
During the 17th over of India's first innings, Jaiswal hit Fernando for three boundaries but was clean-bowled on the final delivery for 45.
After being dismissed, the southpaw received a fiery send-off, prompting him to walk back towards the bowler. As they stood chest-to-chest trading words, Jaiswal's helmet made physical contact with Fernando's forehead. Teammates and on-field umpires quickly rushed in to pull the two players apart before the situation worsened.
Jaiswal later defended his actions on social media while reacting to veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle’s assessment of the confrontation, stating that critics didn't know what was said to him on the field and that India will always "fight and reply" if boundaries are crossed.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, former cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra weighed in on the episode, acknowledging Bhogle's old-school belief that Jaiswal should have walked away while also questioning whether the Indian opener can be blamed for responding to provocation.
Chopra pointed out that Jaiswal has consistently faced below-the-belt banter and aggressive send-offs throughout the series.
"Harsha Bhogle comes from an old-school philosophy of cricket. He felt that Yashasvi Jaiswal got too close to Asitha Fernando and, in a heated moment like that, the right thing to do is to simply walk away. But Jaiswal chose to react. Now I'm wondering: who is right? Can both of them be right?" Chopra said.
"There is constant banter and plenty of send-offs aimed at Jaiswal, and sometimes it crosses the line and goes below the belt. Jaiswal, though, is someone who likes to give it back and take on the challenge," he added.
Chopra also highlighted a generational shift in cricket culture, where youngsters like Jaiswal prefer to respond on the ground rather than ignoring the sledge.
"This is a new way of doing things. Otherwise, I would say, let Yashasvi go as well, let him leave, and after a few days, the matter would be over. But our youth, this new generation, says, 'Why should I wait? If you have said something about me, I will prove right now, today, whether it is right or wrong. I will show you.' That's the new way of actually approaching the world and content," he remarked.
Following match referee Andy Pycroft's assessment under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct (dealing with inappropriate physical contact), both Jaiswal and Fernando were fined 25% of their match fees and handed one demerit point each for their roles in the clash.
