Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando had a heated altercation after the latter dismissed the former on Day 1 of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground in Colombo.

The incident unfolded in the 17th over of India’s first innings. Jaiswal was batting fluently on 45 as has already hit Fernando for three boundaries in that over. However, the right-arm seamer had the last laugh as he produced a sharp delivery that clipped the inside edge onto the southpaw’s stumps.

Following the breakthrough, Fernando delivered an aggressive send-off, leading to a tense face-off between the bowler and the departing batter.

The two came close to exchanging blows but match officials and other Sri Lankan players quickly intervened to prevent any physical escalation.

Jaiswal’s dismissal reduced India to 66/2. Devdutt Padikkal has now been joined by skipper Shubman Gill as the visitors look for a stable partnership after losing both openers.

Earlier, Gill won the toss and opted to bat first. India, leading the series 1-0, have handed a debut cap to off-spinner Saransh Jain, who has replaced Kuldeep Yadav in the Playing XI.
