India is set to travel to Sri Lanka for two Tests in August this year; however, the team management and BCCI selection committee’s plans for the same have been hit by plenty of injury concerns and fitness issues for several key players.
The national selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, would reveal the team for the Test tour by Tuesday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told Times of India on Saturday. The series' first Test will be held in Galle from August 15–19, and the second Test will be held from August 23–27 at the SSC in Colombo.
According to BCCI sources, off-spin all-rounder Washington Sundar will miss the first Test owing to a right hamstring injury, which is a major setback for India given that both Tests are expected to feature spin-friendly grounds.
Depending on his level of fitness, he will be available for the second Test. After sustaining the injury during the second ODI in Cardiff, Sundar was sidelined for the third and final ODI at Lord's in England on July 19. Left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey took his place.
Another worry is that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will probably be selected under the "subject to fitness" condition after missing the third ODI in England due to an impact injury to his left knee during the second ODI in Cardiff. Bumrah has been instructed to "take rest until July 30, after which he will report to the BCCI's Center of Excellence in Bengaluru."
Sai Sudharsan, India's Test No. 3, is also expected and likely to be selected under the "subject to fitness" provision, despite reports that he is "recovering well." Given that Sudharsan has been playing well lately, his availability for the series is essential.
Sundar recently struck hundreds (132 & 168) in both of India A's four-day matches against Sri Lanka during their recent tour. He also hammered 81 against Afghanistan in the June one-off Test in New Chandigarh. The nature of his injury is not known yet.
Pace bowling allrounders Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy are unavailable for the tour after having failed to recover from their injuries so far. Rana suffered a Grade 1 biceps femoris muscle strain (hamstring injury) before the England ODIs.
Nitish Kumar Reddy is still recovering from a left quadriceps injury, which caused him to miss India's recent white-ball tours of Ireland, England, and Zimbabwe.
And the most recent addition to the growing injury list was Prince Yadav, who walked off midway through his over after he clutched his left hamstring in India’s win in the second T20I against Zimbabwe.
Hardik Pandya is still recovering from back spasms and quadriceps strain. Pacer Akash Deep missed the whole IPL 2026 after suffering a recurrence of a lower-back stress reaction. It was first anticipated that he would be out for eight to twelve weeks before flying to Bengaluru for a three-month recuperation program.
Shubman Gill, the captain of India, stated that if the team hopes to be a serious contender at the 2027 ODI World Cup, they cannot afford to have players getting hurt every few games.
"If you look at the first squad we had announced [for the England ODI series], a minimum of five players did not play this match. If one player is injured, you look at playing another combination; if two players are injured, you look at playing another combination, but if after every match some player is missing, then somewhere we are missing a trick.
If you keep the World Cup as the goal, where we have to play 11 matches in a row, here we have players not being able to finish a two-to-three-match series. So, there is some limitation where our players are not being able to play continuously; they play one or two matches, they suffer a niggle, and then we are forced to play a different combination, which we originally did not plan to play. So, keeping all this in mind, it becomes a little difficult when you come to the ground in the morning, and you come to know a player has a niggle, then it's almost like, do you want to take a chance? Some player is 80% fit; you are playing with five bowlers, and if this player comes out after bowling five overs, then who will bowl? This is difficult. So as a group we need to improve our fitness and all those things,” Shubman Gill had said after the 1-2 ODI series loss to England.
