SA v IND 2023-24: WATCH- Virat Kohli bows down to Dean Elgar after he is dismissed for final time in Test cricket  

Mukesh Kumar had Elgar caught by Kohli in slips in his final Test innings.

Virat Kohli hugged Dean Elgar as he walked off the cricket field as a batter for the final time | XDean Elgar, who is captaining South Africa in the ongoing second Test against India, played his final innings in the format on day one of the match on January 3, 2024.

South Africa batted first after winning the toss and was bowled out for 55 runs as Mohammed Siraj ran through their batting, picking 6/15. Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar also took two wickets apiece.  

Indian innings proved to be no better as, despite Virat Kohli’s 46 and contributions by Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma, the visitors collapsed from 153/4 to 153 all out. For the first time in 147 years of Test cricket history, a team lost its last 6 wickets for 0 runs.

Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Nandre Burger all took three wickets each.

This also meant that South Africa’s second innings was also began on day one itself. Aiden Markram (36*) and Dean Elgar, playing his final Test innings, added 37 runs for the first wicket.

But Mukesh Kumar got Elgar to edge one to the first slip when he was on 12 and Virat Kohli took a simple catch. This brought an end to one of the most wonderful Test careers for South Africa and Dean Elgar was given a fitting farewell by the Indian team.

Every Indian player shook hands with Elgar and Virat Kohli before shaking his hands, made the bowing down feature and went to hug the opener.
