South Africa captain Temba Bavuma had won the toss and chosen to bowl first as the match start was delayed due to rain and wet spots on the pitch.

Day one saw South African bowlers dominating the Indian batting as Kagiso Rabada picked up a five-wicket haul. His victims included Rohit Sharma (5), Virat Kohli (38), Shreyas Iyer (31), Shardul Thakur (24) and R Ashwin (8).

KL Rahul and Shardul Thakur had added 43 runs for the 7th wicket to pull India out of a precarious position of 121/6. However, after Shardul was dismissed, Rahul had to maneuver a strike with the tail-enders as India ended day one on 208/8 with Rahul on 70*.
