Before the game, the 22-year-old received his maiden ODI cap from skipper KL Rahul. It turned out to be a memorable debut for Sudharsan as India registered a crushing eight-wicket victory over South Africa.

Asked to bowl first, the visitors bundled out the Proteas for a paltry 116 on 27.3 overs. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh starred with the ball for India, claiming his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs. Right-arm quick Avesh Khan also returned with impressive figures of 4/27 in his 8 overs.

Chasing the target, Sudharsan smashed 55* off 43 while opening the innings and Shreyas Iyer scored 52 off 45 as India got over the line in just 16.4 overs.

Sudharsan’s unbeaten knock was studded with nine boundaries. The southpaw was involved in an 88-run partnership with Iyer. No wonder, the youngster was on cloud nine for the way things folded in his maiden appearance for India.

After the win, Sai Sudharsan shared a heartfelt post on social media platform X.

“Growing up as a small kid like everybody I also dreamt of playing for the country. So with hardwork n grit dreams do come true. Blessed to represent the country and contribute for the team. Looking forward to lots of memories,” Sudharsan wrote.

“Special to receive the cap from @klrahul Bhai & it was amazing to bat with @ShreyasIyer15 Bhai. #INDvsSA,” he added.

With this victory, India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The second ODI will be played in Gqeberha on Tuesday (December 19).
