New Zealand and India clashed in the first ODI of the five-match series on November 4, 2026, at the Eden Park in Auckland. India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bowl first on the bouncy track in Auckland.
While Tim Seifert (38), Daryl Mitchell (28), and Glenn Phillips (30) got starts, the rest of the batters struggled to cope with the bounce and movement of the pitch the Indian pacers got. They were reduced to 146/9 before Blair Tickner made 34 off 23 balls with 4 sixes to push the final score to 185 runs in 40.2 overs.
For India, Arshdeep Singh picked 4/70 in his 10 overs, with Tickner spoiling his bowling figures in the final over, which went for 23 runs. Anshul Kamboj took 2/22 in his 10 overs, while Gurnoor Brar picked three wickets.
India lost Rohit Sharma for a duck, but Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli added 113 runs for the second wicket. However, when India had reached 54/1 in 10.5 overs, it began raining, and the match was interrupted. There was another rain interruption when India reached 64/1, and finally, when the match restarted, India was asked to chase 143 runs in 32 overs.
Virat Kohli continued to make 74 runs in 51 balls with 13 fours and one six, while Gill fell for 37 runs with 5 fours. India lost a few wickets in pursuit to end the match but achieved the target in 22.4 overs with 5 wickets in hand.
India went 1-0 up in the five-game series, and Anshul Kamboj was named the Player of the Match for his 2/22 in 10 overs.
The Indian cricket fraternity lauded the performance of the Indian team and was particularly praiseful of Virat Kohli’s batting and Anshul Kamboj’s bowling on social media.
