Legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin showered rich praise on Naman Dhir after the young all-rounder guided India to a historic victory against New Zealand in the first T20I at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Thursday (October 22).
Chasing a massive target of 226—which marked India's highest successful run chase in T20I history—the visitors found themselves in a high-pressure situation in the final overs.
Coming in at No. 7 with the match hanging in the balance, Dhir showcased incredible composure and clinical execution, blasting an unbeaten 42 runs off just 15 balls (including 5 fours and 2 sixes) to pull off a thrilling four-wicket victory with two balls to spare.
Ashwin was heavily impressed by how the 26-year-old stepped up for the Indian team under immense pressure. He credited Dhir's exposure to high-octane finishes with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL as a primary catalyst for building this elite composure, predicting a very bright future for him as a mainstay finisher for the national side.
“Naman Dhir doesn't seems to have nerves at all. He looks so calm and composed under extreme pressure. You know, playing those close IPL matches has boosted his confidence a lot. It was a blistering knock under extreme pressure. I think not many players in the world can deliver under such pressure in a high run chase,” Ashwin said while speaking on Sony Sports.
“Remember, he has played only handful of matches for India, and already looked like a million dollar player. He's gonna be a serious finisher for India in the future,” he added.
Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri also lauded Naman Dhir's ability to handle pressure situations, linking his confidence directly to his prior experience playing under pressure for MI in the IPL.
Shastri noted that Dhir's explosive cameo against the West Indies in Bengaluru just a week prior was a “trailer”, where he hit an unbeaten 24 off just 6 balls.
“Naman Dhir is again turning it on here at Christchurch. He knows how to bat under pressure, has done it so many times in IPL for MI. That knock against West Indies was a trailer, he is showing the full picture here. He has those long levers, just love those clean hits. It's no half measures, always strikes them clean. India has found a gem in him. What a great talent,” Shastri said during a discussion on Sony Sports.
With his "long levers," clean ball-striking, and capability to chip in with off-spin, Naman Dhir is rapidly cementing his spot as a crucial white-ball utility all-rounder for India.
After the win in first T20I, India skipper Shreyas Iyer also highlighted the value Dhir brings to the side.
“He gives us a lot of options, especially for lefty batsmen, or even the right-handers batting, especially on this ground, coming in and bowling those two-three crucial overs actually can change the momentum. And I personally feel that the calm and composed nature that he showed today, it was simply magnificent to see him bat,” Iyer remarked.
Naman Dhir will look to build on his explosive finish as India face New Zealand in the second T20I on Saturday (October 24) in Christchurch.
