NZ v IND 2022: “Umran Malik not someone only looking to play T20 cricket,” Nehra lauds India's 'shining light' from NZ tour

Umran Malik bowled his heart out in the ODI series against New Zealand.

Umran Malik | GettyIndia's white-ball tour to New Zealand was marred by rain as only two out of the six matches produced results.

While the Men in Blue won the three-T20I series 1-0, they lost the 50-over series 1-0. Still, there were a few positives for the Indian team from the ODI series such as the forms of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer.

Gill registered scores of 50, 45* and 13 in three ODIs while Iyer returned with the knocks of 80 and 49 in the two innings he batted.

Another youngster who impressed one and all with his performance was speedster Umran Malik. While Umran sat out in the T20I series, he bowled his heart out in the ODI series.

The 23-year-old made his ODI debut in the first match and returned with the figures of 2/66. He consistently bowled over 145 kph clicks and also touched the 153 kph mark.

With his display, Umran Malik also caught the attention of former India pacer Ashish Nehra.

"There is no doubt that he is one of the shining lights of not only this tour but whenever he has played before. Everybody is excited about him and the main reason is his pace. You said that he is not someone who is only looking to bowl 4 overs. He has started his career with T20 cricket but I have seen him bowl 16-18 and 20 overs with rapid pace. He is young, he is quick. He is not someone who will hold back or bowl only 80-85 percent. He is not someone only looking to play T20 cricket which is a great thing in today's day and age," Nehra said exclusively on Prime Video.

According to Nehra, all eyes will be on Umran Malik in the near future and he expects the youngster to bowl long spells in the time to come.

"We have seen how T20 cricket has evolved. Majority of the players are keener to play T20 cricket first and that way he is different. The more you play the better he will get. He has shown good control with the old ball and it will be interesting to see how he bowls with the new ball, how the selectors use him and how the management wants him to be used. There is no doubt about it that all eyes will be on him in near future," he added.
