Indian opener Shubman Gill said that it was irritating for both players and the fans to see multiple matches in recent times being called off due to rain or getting affected by the rain. His statement came after the second ODI between New Zealand and India was abandoned after 12.5 overs thanks to the rain.
Not only this but in the ongoing series, the first T20I in Wellington was also called off due to rain, while the Napier T20I was decided via the DLS method.
Gill, who scored 50 in the first game and was looking in good touch during his unbeaten 45 here, said that it does get frustrating at times. He suggested that the boards can consider playing in indoor stadiums or have a way to attach a roof that can be closed when the rains came down to avoid such interruptions.
“This is a decision (playing in indoor stadiums) to be taken by the boards. As a player and as fans, it is irritating to go in and out and see so many matches being affected by rain. But I dont know how I can take a stand for it as it is a big decision. Obviously closed (retractable) roof (stadiums) would be good,” the youngster told media persons after the second ODI.
“It was very frustrating. You don’t know how many overs so you can’t plan your innings,” Gill added.
Gill is a strong contender for a place in the squad of 15 for next year’s ODI World Cup but he said that he isn’t looking that far ahead.
“I am not looking that far ahead and my aim is to make the most of the opportunities that I am getting. That’s what I am trying to do and make most of the opportunities that I get, trying to score big runs for the team,” he stated.
Gill is also been seen as the next flag bearer of Indian batting as the Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli era is nearing its eventual end. But, just like criticism doesn’t affect him, the rich praises too can’t make him lose focus.
“Opinion of others good or bad never affects my game as such when I am batting out there in the middle. Once you are batting, the focus is not on what people say but on the delivery bowled and how to score off that,” he signed off.
