Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, who failed to make the cut in India’s T20I squad for the Asia Cup 2025, could lead India A in the upcoming two red-ball matches against Australia A.

The Australian A team is slated to tour India next week for a couple of four-day red-ball games and three one-day matches.

The two unofficial Tests are set to take place at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, and Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium will stage the three unofficial ODIs.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors are yet to announced India A’s squad for the home series.

According to a Cricbuzz report, Shreyas is likely to be part of the India A squad for the upcoming series against the Australians. The right-hander is currently featuring in the semifinal of the Duleep Trophy 2025 for West Zone against Central Zone in Bengaluru.

The report claims that Shreyas Iyer will get a “prominent role in the side, captaincy or otherwise".

Besides Iyer, top performers of the ongoing Duleep Trophy may be considered for selection along with the likes of all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and top-order batters Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sai Sudharsan. Players such as Narayan Jagadeesan, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rajat Patidar could also be in the selection reckoning.

Jagadeesan, who replaced injured Rishabh Pant in India’s squad for the fifth match of the recently held Test series against England, amassed 197 runs for South Zone in the first innings of their Duleep Trophy 2025 fixture against North Zone, whereas Gaikwad top-scored for West Zone by scoring a total of 184 runs against Central Zone in Bengaluru on Friday.

On the other hand, Patidar returned with 125 and 66 runs in the two innings of the quarterfinal match played last week and was unbeaten on 47 runs from 59 balls in the first innings of the ongoing semifinal match against West Zone on Friday evening.

While Gaikwad and Jagadeesan are yet to make Test debuts for India, Patidar appeared in three red-ball matches against England at home last year.
