Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin called time on his illustrious Indian Premier League (IPL) career last week.
In his farewell note shared on 'X', Ashwin categorially mentioned that he is ready to explore new leagues. “They say every ending will have a new start; my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, a report published in Cricbuzz claims that Ashwin is in talks to potentially become the first high-profile Indian cricketer to feature in the Big Bash League (BBL).
If all goes to plan, the 38-year-old might ply his trade in Australia’s premier T20 competition as early as this season.
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg has already held discussions with Ashwin. “To get someone with Ashwin’s credentials to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels. He’s a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash and to our cricket summer,” Greenberg quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Ashwin also confirmed to the cricket website that he has been approached by the Australian board.
There are still hurdles to clear, especially with BBL teams having already exhausted most of their salary purse. But CA is exploring solutions, including customised contracts and sponsorship-backed deals, to ensure Ashwin’s signing. If it happens, Melbourne is seen as a possible destination.
The deal could be a game-changer for the BBL. Ashwin is one of the most popular cricketers in India and will generate guaranteed eyeballs from the sub-continent, which is the biggest market for the sport that every non-IPL league competes for.
The report added that Ashwin has also spoken to Greenberg about his interest in coaching and hinted that he could use opportunities like the BBL to fine-tune his skills off the field as well. His growing media presence, including his popular vodcasts, means he may also find space in broadcasting roles.
Ashwin’s participation in the BBL might encourage more retired Indian cricketers to make the move.
