It was recently reported that the BCCI selectors had discussions regarding the future of Indian team’s leadership in all three formats. These discussions led to Shubman Gill’s return to the T20I fold and his elevation to vice-captaincy, as current captain Suryakumar Yadav is already 34. In such a situation, Gill is being seen as the candidate for future T20I leadership.

A similar call needs to be taken in the ODI format, as current skipper Rohit is already 38. Moreover, rumours are rife that the October ODI series against Australia could be Rohit’s farewell assignment in international cricket.

While Shubman Gill is considered as a front-runner to take over ODI captaincy, some fans and experts are backing Shreyas Iyer’s candidature.

Meanwhile, former India cricketer Suresh Raina has advocated for Hardik Pandya’s appointment as white-ball skipper. The all-rounder has served as India captain in T20Is and ODIs on a temporary basis in the past, but in the last one year, he was overlooked for leadership duties.

While speaking to Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel, Raina, when asked about who will become India captain after Rohit, replied, “Shubman Gill. Alag player hai vo."

When asked to choose between Gill and Shreyas, Raina said, “Gill any day, but I still feel in white-ball Hardik Pandya will do a lot of miracles as a captain. He should become captain again because he has experience like Kapil paaji (Kapil Dev) in batting, bowling, and fielding. He is a very, very positive guy. Whatever he has done. He is a player’s captain. I feel he has a shade of Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) in him. The way he interacts, the way he conducts energy in the ground. I like it very much."

In the IPL, Hardik Pandya leads the Mumbai Indians while he also captained the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022 and 2023. Under Hardik’s leadership, GT clinched the IPL title in 2022 and finished as runners-up in 2023.
