R Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League on August 27, 2025, bringing down the curtains on a career that began in 2009. He announced himself in the league for Chennai Super Kings that year.

He continued to ply trade for CSK till 2015, winning the IPL title in 2010 and 2011 with the MS Dhoni-led franchise. He also won the CLT20 league with CSK twice during his first stint with the yellow brigade.

After spending years out of the Chennai franchise, R Ashwin was bought by CSK in the IPL 2025 auction, but the homecoming proved to be sorrowful, as he took 7 wickets in 9 games as CSK ended at the 10th place in the points table.

The CSK franchise paid rich tribute to R Ashwin on social media.

“Life comes in a full circle. The journey that began as a Super King ends as a Super King. Forever a lion, forever one of us! Thank you for the Yellovely memories, Ash!” CSK posted.  

After CSK was banned for two years in 2016 and 2017, R Ashwin played for the Rising Pune Supergiants franchise based in Pune. However, he wasn’t bought back by CSK when they returned to the fold in 2018, and Ashwin moved to Punjab Kings and was named captain of the franchise.

He became infamous for running out Jos Buttler on the non-striker’s end during a match against the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.

R Ashwin was released ahead of the IPL auction in 2020 and joined the Delhi Capitals franchise for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. He was part of the Delhi Capitals XI that played in their maiden IPL final in 2020, losing to the Mumbai Indians.

Before moving back to CSK for the IPL 2025 season, R Ashwin’s second-to-last franchise in the IPL was Rajasthan Royals, for whom he formed a deadly spin duo with Yuzvendra Chahal.
