Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selection committee, has reportedly had his contract extended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) until June 2026.
During his tenure, which started in June 2023, India won the Champions Trophy earlier this year and the T20 World Cup in 2024, ending the drought of ICC championships. In addition to an outstanding Test team transition, Team India has advanced to the 2023 ODI World Cup final at home.
Indian Express has reported that Ajit Agarkar’s contract was extended by the BCCI before the IPL 2025 began.
“Under his tenure, the Indian team had won titles and had seen transition (of the Tests and T20) too. The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026, and he had accepted the offer a few months back,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express.
Three stalwarts, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravi Ashwin, had to say goodbye during a difficult time for India under the former all-rounder. While Virat and Rohit will play in ODIs, the off-spinner has given up all forms. Suryakumar Yadav for T20Is and Shubman Gill for Tests were also chosen as new captains.
Agarkar, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra, and S Sharath make up the current selection committee. However, following its annual general body meeting in September, it is anticipated that the senior selection committee will undergo some changes.
Sharath, who was elevated to the senior selection committee in January 2023 after serving as the chairman of the junior selection committee in September 2021, will finish his fourth year.
He is expected to be replaced by a fresh face, and there are questions over SS Das and Subroto Banerjee's retentions as well. According to reports, the board is happy with the current group, and there is just one possible modification to the panel.
BCCI will soon invite applications for the senior women and junior men selection committees. Neetu David, the chairman of the women's committee, Arati Vaidya, and Mithu Mukherjee will all have served as selectors for five years. The board's rules stipulate that members can only hold their position for a maximum of five years. With the World T20 set for next year, this is a crucial season.
Thilak Naidu, Ranadeb Bose, Harvinder Singh Sodhi, Pathik Patel, and Krishen Mohan are members of the junior selection committee. The BCCI is reportedly seeking fresh faces for the junior selection committee as well.
