Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh stated that he was proud of how his protégé Shubman Gill performed in his first outing as India Test captain in the recent series in England. India managed to draw the five-Test series 2-2 thanks to wins at Edgbaston and the Oval.
Team India also played out of their skin to eke out a draw in the fourth Test in Manchester to keep the series alive, being 1-2 down in the series.
Yuvraj emphasized how Shubman Gill, who won the July 2025 ICC Men's Player of the Month award, dismissed skepticism about his international batting performance and led the squad from the front.
“There were a lot of question marks over his overseas record. The guy became the captain and scored four Test hundreds. It's just unbelievable how you take responsibility when you're given it,” Yuvraj said, speaking to ICC Digital on the sidelines of the ‘50 Days To Go’ Women’s Cricket World Cup event.
Shubman Gill amassed 754 runs in 10 innings of the five tests at an average of 75.40. He scored twin centuries in the Edgbaston Test, making 269 and 169. He became the first Indian captain to score a double ton in England and the second, after Virat Kohli, to make a double ton overseas as India captain.
This was also the most runs in a Test series in England by an Indian batter and captain.
“So, very proud of them. I certainly feel it's a win for us, although it's a drawn series, because it's a young team. And it's not easy to go and play well in England and prove yourself,” Yuvraj added.
In addition, Yuvraj praised Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja, both all-rounders, for their courageous, long-duration stand that helped them draw the fourth Test in Manchester.
“The moment in the tournament was when India drew the Test series. I've not seen in a very long time Washington and Jadeja get hundreds and draw a Test match. That speaks volumes. Obviously, Jadeja has been there for a long time. But I think Washington Sundar, as a youngster coming into the team, I think it was incredible to do what he did,” Yuvraj said.
Yuvraj also highlights how well the Indian team fought in the England Tests, despite not having veteran cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to guide them. The duo had announced their retirement from Test cricket days before the India squad for the England Tests was announced.
“I think it's just fantastic because I felt when you have a young team going to England, it's a lot of pressure. You're filling the boots of somebody like Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma; it's not easy. I think the guys took it head-on,” Yuvraj concluded.
The Indian team will now face the West Indies at home in their next Test assignment in October.
