Recently, Abhimanyu Easwaran’s father opened up on his son’s disappointment at being left out of the Indian XI for the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval. Easwaran, who has been with the Indian team as a backup opener since 2022, is yet to make his international debut.
Despite impressing in the two India A games preceding the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Easwaran didn’t get a chance in the Indian XI amidst all the injuries in the contingent. India had a genuine chance to avert a series loss in London after the fourth Test draw in Manchester, which led the team management to consider other lineup options.
To his intense annoyance, however, the 29-year-old was overlooked once again. With the emergence of Sai Sudharsan, a Test cap looks distant for Easwaran, but former India skipper Sourav Ganguly reckons there is still time for the Bengal veteran to break into the Test team.
“He has age on his side. I still believe he will get his chance,” Ganguly said during a promotional event in Kolkata, as quoted by TOI.
“I feel batters like Yashasvi (Jaiswal), KL Rahul, (Shubman) Gill, (Rishabh) Pant, (Ravindra) Jadeja have all got runs. It’s only the No. 3 slot that looked a bit fragile. Maybe Easwaran will be tried out there.”
Abhimanyu Easwaran scored consistently across domestic tournaments last season, with notable innings of 127*, 191, 116, 157*, 200*, and more. He has 7841 runs in 103 first-class games at an average of 48.70, with 27 centuries.
It remains to be seen if Easwaran gets a chance in India’s next Test assignment against West Indies at home in October.
