Team India are 1-2 behind in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. The fourth Test is currently underway at Old Trafford, with the visitors facing a herculean task to save the game after conceding a huge first-innings lead of 311 runs.
The loss in the penultimate Test would mean conceding an unassailable 1-3 lead to England, which will put chief coach Gautam Gambhir under severe scrutiny. Under his guidance, India’s graph in the longest format has gone down drastically, winning just four of 13 Tests so far.
However, a report published in The Telegraph claims that Gambhir may retain his role as head coach of the Indian cricket team but the same cannot be said about the BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his colleague Shiv Sundar Das.
Agarkar's decision-making has reportedly caught the attention of the BCCI, but not in a good way. The board is keeping a close tab on Agarkar and Das in the aftermath of India's poor string of performances in Test cricket.
According to the report, the BCCI is baffled by some of the team management's calls, including wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav warming the benches into the fourth Test of the series and Abhimanyu Easwaran not being given a debut cap despite earning his maiden call-up in 2022.
"The coaches always talk of balance, but keeping a world-class wrist spinner like Kuldeep Yadav out has had disastrous consequences," the report quoted a source as saying.
The report added, "It is understood that the role of the two members of the national selection committee who are on tour with the squad, chairman Ajit Agarkar and East’s representative Shiv Sundar Das, has also come under introspection."
As for Gambhir, the India head coach is safe as of now. Despite guiding the Men in Blue to Champions Trophy 2025 triumph, it's his Test record that has hurt India the most.
Before the England series, India conceded the away Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 to Australia and also suffered a humiliating first-ever home whitewash at the hands of New Zealand.
"Gambhir's record has been disastrous in the longest format - eight losses and four wins in 13 Tests before the Manchester game. As of now, Gambhir stays, since the BCCI doesn’t want a change at the top, especially in a team which is in transition," the report added.
