Former England skipper Michael Atherton has expressed awe for Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s talent, saying that the 14-year-old prodigy has a tad bit of similarity with that of Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.
Atherton’s assessment came after Suryavanshi slammed a breathtaking 52-ball century against England U19, setting a new benchmark in Youth ODIs. The teenage sensation eventually returned with a remarkable 143 off 78 deliveries, including 13 boundaries and 10 sixes.
Widely regarded as a generational talent, Suryavanshi’s latest feat only adds to the growing list of records he’s been collecting. Earlier this year, the southpaw became the youngest player to score a T20 century and the fastest (in terms of balls) Indian to reach a hundred in the IPL
Playing for Rajasthan Royals, Suryavanshi took the Gujarat Titans bowling attack to the cleaners as he hammered a 35-ball ton, immediately grabbing headlines and catching the attention of fans and legends alike.
With his exploits against England U19, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has now earned praise from Atherton – one of the finest commentators in the game today.
“The young man, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who shot to prominence as, teenage prodigy, shot to prominence with a 35-ball 100 in the IPL, hit a 52-ball 100 today. He’s finally out for 143 of 78 balls, 13 fours, 10 sixes, some incredible shots in this innings," Atherton said while speaking on Sky Sports.
“There is a bit of a similarity with Rishabh Pant, the way that he plays, he’s got a beautiful swing of the bat, a very pure and natural swing of the bat and was clearly in fantastic form today, giving it some real welly," he added.
This is not the first time Suryavanshi has hogged the limelight. Just last year, the swashbuckling left-hander struck the second-fastest century in Men’s Youth Tests — a dazzling 56-ball hundred against Australia U19 in Chennai.
At just 14 years of age, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has become a household name by shattering records across Youth ODIs, Youth Tests, and the IPL. With a blend of explosive strokeplay and natural flair, the teenager is already showing signs of a very special future.
