Following his controversial dismissal during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL 2025) game between the Dindigul Dragons and IDream Tiruppur Tamizhians, R Ashwin had a rare on-field tantrum.
Leading the Dragons, Ashwin came out to start the innings but was declared leg-before off left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore in the fifth over. With a couple of boundaries and a six off the opening ten deliveries, he sped to 18 and looked menacing.
Ashwin attempted to play the paddle sweep on the eleventh ball, but the delivery hit him on the pads instead. Ashwin was running for a quick single when Umpire Venkatesan Krithika raised his finger in response to the bowler's plea.
It was evident from the replays that the ball pitched outside the leg stump. Ashwin was unable to request DRS because, according to a new TNPL regulation, he and his opening partner Shivam Singh (30 off 27 balls) had used up all of their allotted referrals in the first over on leg-side wide deliveries.
Ashwin was forced to return to the dugout since he had run out of referrals. Ashwin was so shocked and furious that he was seen fervently questioning Krithika about the choice. When they first met, Umpire Krithika looked past him, but she later turned to defend her choice.
Ashwin was visibly annoyed, and while leaving the ground, he made sure that everyone around him knew how he felt.
While returning, he first smashed his bat onto his leg guards to let some steam out, and then, as he reached near the boundary ropes, he opened his gloves and flung them in disgust.
And now, in the aftermath, Ashwin has been handed a monetary fine. Ashwin had to pay the price for his erratic behavior on the field, which prompted the officials to hand him a total of 30 percent penalty for the act.
"Ashwin was fined 10 percent for showing dissent towards the umpires and 20 percent for misuse of equipment. He accepted the sanctions," a TNPL official told Cricbuzz.
