Shreyas Iyer has ‘officially joined the race for India white-ball captaincy,’ an influential decision maker in BCCI has revealed. This comes after his success as captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Iyer is the only captain to lead three different teams to the IPL final: Delhi Capitals in 2020, Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, and Punjab Kings in 2025. Iyer was the captain when KKR won the IPL 2024 tournament, their third IPL title win.
Iyer scored 604 runs in 17 games, making him the top scorer for PBKS. His 87* in the Qualifier 1 match against the Mumbai Indians, where he scored six half-centuries, will be remembered for a very long time. He almost single-handedly rescued PBKS against MI and took them over the line.
Iyer's development as a great captain is now regarded as the major takeaway from the IPL 2025, per an article in The Indian Express that quotes "one of Indian cricket's influential decision-makers."
"Right now, he just plays ODIs, but after this IPL, we can't keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus, he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” the official said, as per Indian Express.
At the moment, Suryakumar Yadav is the T20I captain, while Rohit Sharma is the ODI captain. For India's Test series against England, Shreyas Iyer has not been selected.
Even though Shreyas Iyer's IPL season ended without a trophy, he solidified his position as the captain India may require in the near future.
Shubman Gill will be put on trial by fire as England's captain, but the verdict is still pending. However, Shreyas Iyer ought to be considered among the top captains in Indian cricket after June 3, 2025.
Similar to his legendary India teammate Rohit Sharma, he has a "Bindaas Mumbaikar" quality, a calm quotient like Dhoni, and an aggressive streak like Virat Kohli when the need arises.
