Even though he won't always be a cricket player, Jasprit Bumrah, the India pacer, has stated that his family comes first. He believes that his family is more important than his career because the former is constant while the latter will eventually end.
Along with his wife, sports presenter Sanjana Ganesan, and their son, Angad, Bumrah's family also includes his mother and sister.
With players taking time off from the international schedule if and when their families required them, the family issue has grown in importance in Indian cricket.
“For me, family is more important than my career because you know that is constant. There are two things that I take seriously. One is my family, and one is my game, but family comes first. I have to give priority, and I do give priority because I will not be a cricketer all the time. For them, I’m not a cricketer. I’m a human being, and you know, being a young father, seeing my son, you know, he started picking up the ball and started playing with the ball, which is not advisable at this moment,” Bumrah stated in conversation with Michael Clarke on his Beyond 23 podcast.
“I’m recommending him to hit sixes as well because that’s where the… It’s like batting? Yes, maybe a little bit of both, but please do bat because that’s where the trend is heading," Bumrah added.
The BCCI has released a set of regulations following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy fiasco. On long excursions, the board planned to restrict family visits. On tours that go longer than a month and a half, families will be permitted to accompany the cricket players for a maximum of two weeks.
According to the regulations, family visits could be restricted to a week for shorter tours. No family members were with the team until the very conclusion of the competition, which also happened at the Champions Trophy recently.
