Ravindra Jadeja is all set to travel to England with the Indian team next month to take part in the five-match Test series, starting June 20 in Leeds.

After the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket earlier this month, Jadeja will be India’s most experienced player in the first series of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Ahead of the England tour, the all-rounder offered his perspective on the differences and challenges that one faces being a short-format captain compared to the Test format.

According to Jadeja, Test captaincy is geared towards understanding the rhythm of play over a prolonged period of time while T20 captains are lot more exposed to high-intensity pressure situations.

“The Test format is as such, where you just have to change two or three fielders, according to the bowler. Not according to the batter," Jadeja said in a recent interview with R Ashwin for his YouTube channel.

“That’s why I say captaining in the Test format is different. It’s much simpler. It’s about reading when your bowler is in good rhythm and when to play him or not play him. When to bring in your main bowler."

“It’s a bit calculative. But, it’s not as demanding as captaincy in the IPL or in the T20 format. Because in the shorter formats, every ball is an event. If a ball goes for a six or four, then one is forced to make changes. So, captaining in the Test format is not so chaotic," he explained.

Jadeja, who has played under multiple captains such as the likes of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, highlighted the calmer and more forgiving nature of Test captaincy.

“I’ve played under many captains. But I have never noticed something so starkly challenging in the Test format. There’s no pressure to suddenly change your batting order, and you also have ample time and breaks to decide changes. Like the batter at play doesn’t feel any pressure from the captain to play a certain shot," Jadeja remarked.

“So, the only thing I believe is that the challenge in Test cricket is in learning how and when to utilise your bowlers, according to the situation."

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has been named India’s new Test captain ahead of the England tour. Rishabh Pant will assist him in the role a deputy as India embark on a new era in Test cricket following the retirements of Ashwin, Kohli and Rohit.
