Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has credited his son Yuvraj Singh for mentoring and nurturing Shubman Gill and being the reason behind Gill becoming the new India Test captain. Gill was announced as Rohit Sharma’s successor by BCCI on Saturday, ahead of India’s upcoming Test tour of England.
Yograj Singh emphasized the impact of strong mentorship and family support in shaping Gill's career.
"The credit for Shubman Gill's performance goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh. If Shubman Gill has become the captain today and will stay for a long time, Yuvraj Singh's guidance will play and has played an essential role in that," Yograj Singh told ANI.
Yograj, himself a former India international and father of Yuvraj Singh, highlighted how Yuvraj's cricketing intelligence has helped Gill grow both as a player and a leader.
"Someone like Yuvraj Singh, the greatest cricketing brain in the world, taking Gill under his wing is a big thing," he stated.
Gill, whose poise and technique have impressed in all formats, will now have to lead India in the longest format.
In recent years, Gill has emerged as one of the youngest players to occupy the role. He has led India in a five-match Twenty20 International assignment in Zimbabwe in 2024, despite the fact that he has no experience as a captain in the red-ball format. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Gill has also served as captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT).
In both ODIs and T20Is, Gill has also held the position of vice captain. In February 2025, he served as Rohit Sharma's assistant for India's successful Champions Trophy campaign in the United Arab Emirates. Gill has participated in 32 Test matches and amassed 1,893 runs, including five hundreds.
