Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was conferred with the Padma Shri award by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday (April 28).
Ashwin received the prestigious honor for his outstanding contributions to cricket. He was part of 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy-winning teams and also played a pivotal role in India’s Test dominance for nearly a decade.
The BCCI congratulated Ashwin for winning the fourth-highest civilian award in India. “Congratulations to @ashwinravi99 on being conferred the prestigious Padma Shri award by the Hon'ble President of India @rashtrapatibhvn, honouring his remarkable achievements and an illustrious career with #TeamIndia,” the board wrote on X.
Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in December 2024.
The 38-year-old represented India in 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is, picking up 765 wickets across all formats. He finished his career as the country’s second highest wicket-taker (537 scalps) in Test cricket, only behind Anil Kumble’s record tally of 619 dismissals.
Ashwin is currently playing for Chennai Super Kings in the 2025 edition of Indian Premier League. The five-time champions splashed INR 9.75 crore to secure his services during the mega auction last year.
