Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli has been dealing with health issues in recent years. A video of him looking in a fragile state went viral last December. In the clip, the 53-year-old, visibly frail and physically weak, was seen struggling to stand up on his feet at an event in Mumbai.
This heart-wrenching moment left the fans and Indian cricket fraternity deeply worried. Since then, a number of former Indian cricketers have stepped forward to offer financial assistance.
Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar had also vowed to help Kambli, saying that the 1983 WC-winning team would rally together to assist their fellow cricketer. And now he has fulfilled his promise.
According to a TOI report, Gavaskar has extended support to Kambli through his CHAMPS Foundation, which aids needy former international sportspersons.
The report claims that Kambli will receive monthly assistance of INR 30,000 for the rest of his life, starting April 1. It will also provide INR 30,000 annually for his medical expenses.
Kambli met Gavaskar during the opening event for the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the Wankhede Stadium in January this year. Despite struggling to walk, Kambli showed his respect for Gavaskar by touching his feet.
Anil Joshi, Gavaskar's long-time friend, revealed that the iconic cricketer met Kambli's doctors after meeting him at the Wankhede Stadium and instructed his foundation to immediately provide assistance to him.
"Gavaskar had wanted to help Kambli ever since he learned about his deteriorating health last year. A day after their meeting at Wankhede Stadium, Gavaskar met two of Kambli's doctors - Dr. Shailesh Thakur and another physician - and me. After being fully briefed on his condition, he instructed the CHAMPS Foundation to immediately begin financial and medical assistance," Joshi told TOI.
Vinod Kambli represented India in 104 ODI matches, amassing 2477 runs at 32.59 with 14 fifties and two centuries. He also played 17 Test matches, scoring 1084 runs at 54.20 with four tons and three fifties.
