Inzamam Ul Haq, former Pakistan cricketer, had slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the ongoing decline in the nation’s cricket. This comes after Pakistan was eliminated from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in the group stage itself, a tournament they hosted.
Currently, the Pakistan team is in New Zealand for a white-ball tour and has lost the first 2 T20Is of the five-match series.
Inzamam blamed the issues to weak decision-making and frequent changes at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). In an interview with journalists in Lahore, Inzamam explained how the national team's performance has suffered in recent years due to a lack of continuity and continuous preparation.
"We are not working in the right direction and making the wrong calls in many areas,” Inzamam was quoted by Times of India.
Inzamam emphasized that without a good strategy and its effective implementation, the team's performance will continue to deteriorate. He stated that the frequent changes in team administration, coaching staff, and player selection have further exacerbated the current disarray and instability in Pakistan cricket.
"I would think that the cricket board now needs to learn from its mistakes and not repeat the same mistakes we have made in the last two years. In the past two years, the performance of the Pakistan team has been on a decline. If we don't work in the right direction, we will continue to fall further," he warned.
Inzamam's tenure as the PCB's head selector was also dogged by administrative mismanagement, prompting him to leave in 2023 when the board failed to manage a conflict of interest scenario.
Reflecting on his tenure, he remarked, "We need to sit down and think about where the mistakes are being made."
Inzamam explained that continuous changes in management and coaching only undermine player confidence.
"Instead of making too many changes, we need to think carefully about where things are going wrong. If there are constant changes, players won't gain the confidence they need, and the situation will remain the same," he said.
He also expressed his support for Babar Azam, characterizing him as an exceptional cricketer going through a difficult period.
"Babar Azam is a top player. Everyone goes through a rough patch, but the national team hasn't been playing good cricket for the past few months," Inzamam stated.
