Aamir Jamal, a Pakistan all-rounder, has reportedly been fined PKR 1.4 million (Rs 4.3 lakh) for violating the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) code of conduct after a contentious act during a home Test against England in October 2024. Jamal's alleged misconduct was to display the number '804' on his Test cap during an interview after the day's play.
The action was seen as a political message in support of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently serving time in prison. Imran Khan is regarded as one of Pakistan's best cricketers ever, having helped the country win its first and only Cricket World Cup title in 1992. Many modern-day players see him as a hero.
According to Samaa TV, Jamal's fine was the harshest of several fines lately imposed by the PCB. The number '804' is believed to be Imran Khan's jail badge number. In Pakistan, active players frequently publicly declare their political affiliations.
The PCB considered Jamal's actions as a violation of its laws, reaffirming its position that players must avoid political statements on the field. His contentious move also reportedly cost him a spot in Pakistan's side for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Pakistan was eventually eliminated from the competition after losing two out of two games in the group round. Jamal was not the only player facing disciplinary punishment.
There were other players also fined by the PCB for breach of code conduct.
Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, and Abdullah Shafique were each fined PKR 5,00,000 (Rs 1.5 lakh) for returning late during Pakistan’s tour of Australia last year. Sufiyan Muqeem, Abbas Afridi, and Usman Khan were penalized USD 200 (Rs 17,000 approx) each for failing to comply with team discipline during Pakistan’s tour of South Africa.
Pakistan team is currently on a white-ball tour of New Zealand and lost the first T20I of the five-match series embarrassingly.
