KL Rahul opens up on his preferred batting position; says he is ready to adapt to team’s needs

Rahul batted at No. 6 in India's triumphant Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.

KL Rahul | GettyAhead of the IPL 2025 season, Indian wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul revealed his preferred batting position, saying that he is most comfortable at the top of the order. However, the stylish right-hander is open to adapting to the team’s needs.

Rahul, who normally bats at No. 5 in ODIs, was pushed down a spot in the recently held Champions Trophy but still returned with 174 runs in five innings to help India clinch the coveted title.

"I have grown up playing in the top order. From my first competitive match in Mangalore at 11 to my early days for India, I have been a top-order batter. It's where I feel most comfortable," Rahul said in an interaction with JioHotstar.

"You don’t always get to choose your role. Over the years, I’ve learned to embrace that and give my best wherever needed," he added.

Rahul, who has previously captained Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, reportedly declined the opportunity to lead Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL.

Reflecting on the IPL auction, he acknowledged that it can shape a player’s career. "As a captain, I’ve seen the pressure of building a squad, but for players, it's even tougher. Your career is at stake. I was nervous, even anxious, but I knew this was the right move," he said.

Spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel is now tipped to become the next DC captain. After a disappointing stint with LSG, Rahul is looking forward to a fresh start with the Capitals.

"I’m happy to join DC. Parth Jindal is a close friend, and we’ve often discussed cricket. This will be a new experience — my fourth or fifth IPL team. I feel both excited and nervous."

DC have never won the IPL, but Rahul is optimistic about their change in fortunes this season. "The squad looks balanced, with a mix of experience and young talent. Playing alongside stars like Mitchell Starc, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav will be exciting. I can’t wait for the season to begin."

Rahul also reflected on his international journey, having remained unbeaten on 34 in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand.

"My career has had highs and lows, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Now, I look forward to the next decade, applying my experience, growing as a player, and winning more matches for my team," he concluded.
