India’s young opener Shubman Gill has become the new no.1 ranked batter in the latest ICC ODI rankings that were released on February 19, 2025. He dethroned Pakistan’s Babar Azam to clinch the top spot in 50-over cricket rankings.
It creates an intriguing subplot for what will happen over the next few weeks during the eight-team competition in Pakistan and Dubai, and it's a significant upheaval at the top of the standings right before the Champions Trophy 2025 begins.
Gill has topped the ODI cricket rankings for the second time; the Indian batter had surpassed Babar to claim the top spot, halfway through the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup,
Gill has been in terrific form recently, with his century against England in Ahmedabad during the third one-day international of the just-finished series catapulting the 25-year-old to the top of the rankings.
Babar falls to second position, 23 rating points behind the new No. 1, while India's Rohit Sharma remains in third place, 45 rating points behind his fellow Indian opener.
Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand (up two places to fifth) and Charith Asalanka of Sri Lanka (up eight positions to eighth) also gain ground in the top ten, while Pakistan skipper Mohammad Rizwan moves up six places to 15th with a new career-high rating.
Devon Conway (up five places to 35th) and Glenn Phillips (up six places to 41st) make significant gains on the list of ODI batters this week, while in-form Pakistan right-hander Salman Agha jumps 24 places to 48th following strong performances in the recent Tri-Nation series.
The other major upheaval happened in the ICC ODI bowling rankings as Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana became the new no.1 ranked ODI bowler.
While Sri Lanka will not compete in the Champions Trophy, Theekshana earned the top slot based on his performance against Australia, which featured an outstanding four-wicket haul in the series' first match in Colombo.
Afghan spin wizard Rashid drops to second and will be eager to reclaim the No. 1 spot as he trails his Sri Lankan counterpart by just 11 rating points.
Kuldeep Yadav (up one spot to fourth), South Africa's Keshav Maharaj (re-entering the rankings in sixth), and Mitchell Santner (up four rungs to seventh)—are all inside the top 10 after making progress this week.
