The reason behind The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) bringing out new rules, especially with regards to luggage, after the Australia tour debacle has been revealed.
Amidst the 10 new diktats by the BCCI, one was putting a cap on the weight of luggage the players can carry for overseas assignments. According to the report, the board had to implement the regulation to prevent similar difficulties from occurring again. The BCCI has underlined that under the new guideline, it will only fund the cost of bags weighing up to 150 kg.
Dainik Jagran published an alarming report, revealing how certain players have taken advantage of the board's leniency. During the Down Under tour, a player reportedly requested that the board manage and pay for more than 27 pieces of luggage.
The luggage belonged not only to the player but also to his family and personal staff. According to the report, the weight of the bags exceeded 250kg, requiring the board to pay.
The bags contained 17 bats and other stuff belonging to the player's family and personal staff. The BCCI guideline requires that a player's family and personal staff carry their luggage separately. However, the athlete persuaded the BCCI to handle everything as part of his suitcase.
According to the Jagran report, the player in question was accompanied by his family members throughout the tour. The BCCI had to shoulder the cost of transporting the player's and his family members' belongings from India to Australia and back, as well as from one city to another during the tour.
While the exact money spent by the board during this process isn't known, the figure is expected to be in lakhs.
This system had a negative impact on other members of the team, prompting them to adopt a similar strategy. As a result, the BCCI was forced to take action and implement new restrictions.
Since the Australia tour, much has changed in Indian cricket. Players must now travel to matches on the team bus. No player is permitted to make personal arrangements for team travel.
Now, as the Indian team prepares to travel for the ICC Champions Trophy to Dubai, the BCCI has ruled that no family members will be allowed to travel with the players for the tournament.
According to a PTI report, a senior player sought clarity on the topic because he wished to fly his wife to Dubai for the series. The board is claimed to have informed the gamer that the rules will stay the same for everyone.
