Dasun Shanaka faces investigation for allegedly absconding from a domestic match to participate in ILT20

Shanaka left an important domestic match hours early to play an ILT20 game for the Dubai Capitals.

Dasun Shanaka | GettyFormer Sri Lanka cricket captain Dasun Shanaka is facing an investigation by the nation's cricket board. The probe was launched after Shanaka left an important domestic match hours early to play an ILT20 game for the Dubai Capitals on February 2, ESPNCricinfo reported.

According to the report, SLC’s chargesheet includes the accusation that first-class match referee Wendell Labrooy had been led to believe Shanaka had a concussion, in order to approve a substitute.

"SSC [Shanaka's first-class club] would probably be conducting their own inquiry as well," SLC CEO Ashley de Silva told ESPNcricinfo.

Shanaka is alleged to have left the domestic fixture before he was supposed to. He had been among the three players called back from the ILT20 by the SSC for their match against Moors Sports Club in the Major League Tournament, as SSC strove to avoid relegation.

It was a three-day competition and Shanaka featured in the first two days, bowling 21 overs and claiming a wicket in Moors' innings, before finishing on 39 not out at the end of day two.

The absconding is alleged to have happened on day three, but before he left, Shanaka slammed a further 84, hitting 123 off 87 balls. He did not bowl an over in the next Moors innings (the third of the match), and played no further part in the game.

Several hours later, Shanaka was spotted batting for the Dubai Capitals in ILT20, scoring 34 runs off 12 balls. He didn't bowl in the ILT20 game either. However, his appearance in the match raised questions about the legitimacy of his injury.

Dubai Capitals went on to win the ILT20, with Shanaka playing three further games for them.
