Sanju Samson fractures index finger, likely to remain out of action for up to six weeks: Report

Samson sustained the injury during the fifth T20I against England in Mumbai.

Sanju Samson | GettyIndia wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has fractured his index finger after being hit by a bouncer off Jofra Archer during the fifth T20I against England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday (February 2).

According to a PTI report, Samson has made his way back home to Thiruvananthapuram and will be back in training after undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He would need clearance to get back to the national side.

An unnamed source within the BCCI has suggested that it would take five to six weeks before Samson can be back training in the nets. As a result, he would miss out on Kerala’s Ranji Trophy quarterfinal clash against Jammu and Kashmir, slated to get underway on February 8.

The 30-year-old is likely to return to competitive action in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season for Rajasthan Royals.

“Samson has fractured his right index finger. It will take him five to six weeks before he can resume proper nets. So there is no chance of him playing the Ranji Trophy quarter-final for Kerala (vs J&K) in Pune from February 8-12," a BCCI source in the know of things told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“In all likelihood, his comeback will happen in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals," he added.

Talking about the injury, Jofra Archer’s shorter delivery went on to struck Sanju Samson on the gloves during the first over of India’s innings and he called in for the physio as well.

The report claims that the swelling had increased once he made his way to the dugout. Samson didn’t come out on the field in the second innings as substitute Dhruv Jurel kept wickets for India. The scans had revealed that he had sustained a fracture on his index finger.

The good news is that the Indian team does not have any T20Is scheduled at the moment with the ODI series and the Champions Trophy 2025 lined up. Samson’s next assignment would be the away series to Bangladesh, slated to be held in August.
