Shreyas Iyer talked about his knock in the 2023 World Cup against Sri Lanka, where he scored 82 runs in quick time, as his favorite knock from the tournament. He reckons that external talks pushed him to follow his instincts and not look back.
Iyer's batting was a source of concern, as he had only scored one fifty in the four games preceding the group-stage match against Sri Lanka. Given that the fourth position is quite important in the top rank.
“The 82 against Sri Lanka. Because there was a lot of talk about dropping me from the squad and that I’m not providing much for the team. Even though I had scored a 50 against Pakistan, there was some talk that put me in a helter-skelter situation. That kind of (talk) boosted my instincts from within,” Iyer told Indian Express.
However, the Mumbai batter refused to give up and pushed himself to play admirably. He eventually went on a batting rampage, scoring 530 runs, and ended up as India's third-highest run-getter in that season.
“I wanted to just give my 110 percent. And in that game, I decided that I would just back my instincts and go full throttle. No looking back. I’m impressed by the way I played in that game. I became my own fan after that. It was a game-changing innings, especially in the World Cup," he commented.
Last year, Shreyas Iyer fell out of favor with the national team and was dropped from the BCCI's central contract list. However, he has subsequently redeemed himself by helping Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy lately.
As a result of his local success, Iyer has returned to the national squad, where he has been selected for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 campaign and England ODIs.
