“My dad isn’t media trained,” R Ashwin reacts to his father alleging 'humiliation' as reason for sudden retirement

Ashwin retired after taking 765 wickets in international cricket for India.

Ravichandran Ashwin | GettyA day after Ravichandran Ashwin called time on his illustrious international cricket career, his father gave a statement that the Indian off-spinner’s retirement comes as a result of 'humiliation'.

In an exclusive interview with CNN News18, Ashwin's father, Ravichandran, claimed that his son was continually humiliated, which may have contributed to his retirement announcement midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“I too came to know last minute, actually. That was going on in his mind I don’t know. He just announced. I too accepted it with full pleasure. I did not have any feeling at all for that. But the way he gave his retirement, one part I was very happy, another part not happy because he should have continued,” Ravichandran said.

“(Retiring) is his (Ashwin’s) wish and desire, I cannot interfere in that, but how he gave that, there could be many reasons. Only Ashwin knows, maybe humiliation," he added.

The statement sparked controversy as fans speculated that not all was going well in the Indian dressing room.

However, Ashwin clarified through social media that his 'dad isn't media trained' and requested his followers to forgive him.

“My dad isn’t media trained, dey father enna da ithelaam. I never thought you would follow this rich tradition of “dad statements”. Request you all to forgive him and leave him alone,” he tweeted.

Ashwin was not part of India's playing XI during the third Test at the Gabba. He was also left out of the line-up for the series opener in Perth but played in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval, where he claimed one wicket and scored 29 runs across two innings.

Ashwin represented India in 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is, picking up 765 wickets across all formats. He finished his career as the country’s second highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 537 scalps to his name.
