Sunil Gavaskar, former India cricketer, has stated that the entire 1983 World Cup winning team is concerned about the well-being of Vinod Kambli, ex-India batter, and wants to help him get back in top shape.
His words of concern came after a video of his recent public appearance went viral in which Kambli was unable to stand on his feet and had to be helped as he was greeted by his friend Sachin Tendulkar, when they were part of the unveiling of a memorial of his childhood coach, the late Ramakant Achrekar, in Mumbai recently.
While meeting Tendulkar, Kambli refused to let go of his hand and was later seen addressing the crowd in Marathi in a garbled speech.
Kambli has been battling ill-health and alcoholism for some time now and Marcus Couto, a close friend and former first-class umpire, informed the Times of India of some shocking information about Kambli's condition. He said that the player has been rehabilitated 14 times but still suffers from severe health issues.
Concerned about Kambli's well-being, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar stated that the entire 1983 World Cup-winning squad was willing to go to any length to ensure his health and safety.
"The 1983 team is very conscious of the younger players. For me, they are like grandsons. If you see their age, some are like sons. We are all very concerned, particularly when fortunes desert them. I don't like the word help. What the '83 team wants to do is take care of him. We want to take care of Vinod Kambli and help him get back on his feet," said Gavaskar talking to 'Sports Today'.
"How we will do, we'll see in future. We want to take care of cricketers who are struggling when fortunes don't smile on them," Gavaskar added.
Even 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev had stated that he would bear the costs if Vinod Kambli goes into rehab and works on his issues.
Kambli's health has deteriorated for more than a decade. In 2013, he had a serious heart attack due to blocked arteries, necessitating angioplasty. Depression has also been an ongoing issue, compounded by charges of alcoholism.
