Aaryavir Sehwag, son of former India batter Virender Sehwag, hogged the headlines on Thursday (November 21) after he slammed a double hundred for Delhi on Day 2 of their Cooch Behar Trophy match against Meghalaya at the MCA Cricket Ground in Shillong.
For the record, Cooch Behar Trophy is a four-day cricket tournament organished by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the Under 19 players.
Opting to bat first in the match, which got underway on Wednesday (November 20), Meghalaya posted a total of 260 runs in their first innings.
In reply, Delhi took a massive lead of 208 runs at stumps on Day 2, for the loss of just two wickets after a sensational 180-run opening stand between Aaryavir and Arnav S Bugga. The latter scored 114 before his dismissal, but Aaryavir carried on to complete the double century.
The 17-year-old Aaryavir remained unbeaten on 200 off 229 at the close of play on the second day. Dhanya Nakra was the other unbeaten batter, having scored 98 off 91.
On Day 3, Aaryavir added 97 more runs to his overnight tally. He was dismissed by RS Rathor for 297 runs off 309 deliveries, including 51 boundaries and three sixes. Dhanya also went on hit a century (130) before getting out.
Aaryavir’s knock was appreciated by his proud father Virender Sehwag on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
“Well played @aaryavirsehwag. Missed a Ferrari by 23 runs. But well done, keep the fire alive and may you score many more daddy hundreds and doubles and triples. Khel jaao..,” Sehwag wrote on X.
For the unversed, Virender Sehwag had vowed to gift his son a Ferrari should he score more than 319 runs in an innings – his highest score in Test cricket. Sehwag had played a historic 319-run knock during the Multan Test against Pakistan in 2004.
The 46-year-old had made this promise when he was felicitated by the BCCI after his retirement from international cricket in 2015.
"Yes, my kids know I have made some humongous scores in Test cricket. So I have told them, if you cross that 319-run mark even in school cricket, I will present you a Ferrari," Sehwag had told renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle.
