“Promotion of players by player agents or media…,” Mickey Arthur raises issues affecting Pakistan cricket

Pakistan lost the first Test against England by an innings and 47 runs.

Pakistan cricket team | GettyPakistan succumbed to another humiliating defeat on home soil in the longest format as England hammered them by an innings and 47 runs in the Multan Test on Friday (October 11).

In reply to Pakistan’s first innings total of 556, the visitors piled up a mammoth 823/7 before declaring, curtesy of Harry Brook’s triple century (317) and Joe Root’s double hundred (262).

After conceding a substantial lead of 267 runs, the hosts were bowled out for 220 in their second innings to concede a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

This was Pakistan’s sixth consecutive Test loss and third on the bounce at home, leading to strong reactions from their fans and former players alike.

However, former coach Mickey Arthur raised concerns about certain issues that affected the team's performance.

Arthur emphasized that Pakistani players have the talent to compete at the highest level and called for greater consistency in team selection and management to improve their performance.

"Just a few thoughts as a follower of Pakistan cricket! 1.The players are very very skilled and are the right one's. 2.The inconsistency around selection, environment and administration plays a role in team morale, give the players structure and they will perform!," Arthur wrote on social media platform X.

Arthur also questioned the roles of agents and media in over-promoting players, which he believes can create a false sense of pride. He argued that this excessive attention often takes players away from reality, leading them to lose focus on team objectives and overestimate their own importance.

"3.The vile rhetoric from media and media driven agendas do not help! 4.The promotion of players by player agents or media makes the player sometimes think he is way more important than he is in reality creating a false view! 5.Playing for Pakistan should be the best time ever!" Arthur added.

Pakistan have now gone 11 consecutive Tests at home without a win with their last win coming in February 2021 against South Africa.

The pressure on the Shan Masood-led side is at an all-time high and they will be desperate to change their fortunes in the second Test against England, slated to be held in Multan from October 15.
