Michael Vaughan hailed Joe Root after he broke Alastair Cook’s record for most Test runs for England. Root achieved this feat in the ongoing first Test against Pakistan. This match is being played in Multan and saw Pakistan notching 556 after choosing to bat first.

Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood, and Salman Agha scored centuries for Pakistan, while Saud Shakeel made 82 runs. Jack Leach starred with the ball for England with three wickets.

Ollie Pope, England captain fell for a duck, while Zak Crawley made 78 runs. Ben Duckett and Joe Root put England back on track, with Duckett falling for 84 runs.

However, on day 3, Joe Root led the charge for England and scored a brilliant fifty. In the process, Root surpassed Alastair Cook's previous record of 12,472 runs and became the leading run-getter for England in Test cricket.

With this achievement, Root is now sixth on the all-time list of Test run scorers, trailing legends such as Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, and Rahul Dravid, and is still chasing Sachin Tendulkar, who leads with 15,921 runs.

Root now has a chance to break Tendulkar's record, which was previously thought to be unbreakable. According to former England captain Michael Vaughan, Root can play well into his forties like the side's legendary former pacer, James Anderson.

“Joe’s love of the game means he will not be like Alastair Cook, who he overtakes into the top spot. Cook retired six years ago, at almost exactly the same age – 33 – that Joe is now. But I see Joe going into his forties, like Anderson has. There is still plenty for him to tick off, including that missing hundred in Australia. But I watch him bat in Australia and do not see a major technical problem, he just has not cracked three figures yet,” Vaughan wrote for the Telegraph.

“Root is already cricketing royalty and there is no doubt in my eyes that he has become England’s greatest batsman already. No one has played the different forms of the game better than him, and he has got the runs to show for it. If he plays as long as I am sure he will, he will overtake Sachin Tendulkar and be the leading Test run-scorer. More than just being a great player, he does it all with a smile on his face, and is simply the greatest example for young kids to follow,” stated Vaughan further.

The Indian great's lofty record had long been seen as an unattainable peak in cricket, but Root's extraordinary consistency, ability to score runs in any conditions, and unwavering hunger have made this feat more realistic than ever before.
