India’s star batter Virat Kohli struggled to score runs in the first Test against Bangladesh at Chepauk, registering scores of 6 and 17 across the two innings.

In the first innings, Kohli was caught behind chasing a ball outside off, while in the second, he failed to pick a fuller-length delivery and was given out LBW.

Kohli’s low scores in Chennai saw his Test average further dipping to 48.74. The 35-year-old currently has 8871 runs to his name from 114 Tests, including 29 hundreds.

In the wake of Kohli’s recent failures, former Australia spinner Brad Hogg has said that Virat Kohli can't get past Sachin Tendulkar's record.

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Hogg compared Tendulkar's tally of Test runs to Kohli and England batter Joe Root.

According to Hogg, Root has a fair chance to break the world record of 15,921 runs that Tendulkar racked up in his illustrious 200-Test career.

The 33-year-old Joe Root, with 12,402 runs so far in 146 Tests, is 3519 runs behind Sachin Tendulkar.

"I just don't think Virat is going to get there," said Hogg. "I think he's lost his momentum, and the momentum that he's lost has been for a number of years now. He's got to turn around in the next 10 Test matches, or he's going to drop off."

"So, Joe Root has (played) 146 Test matches with 12,000 (12402) runs. Sachin Tendulkar made nearly 16,000 (15,921) runs in 200 Test matches. That's 4,000 runs in 66 Tests. I think Joe Root can go close to toppling that," he added.

"Watch out, Joe Root is on the move to beat Sachin Tendulkar! I think quietly he'll have that in the back of his mind to try and topple that little unique stat," he further stated.

Sachin Tendulkar is the only batter to have 100 international centuries (51 in Tests + 49 in ODIs). Virat Kohli broke his record of 49 ODI hundreds during the 2023 World Cup. Overall, Kohli has 80 centuries to his name across formats.

On the other hand, Joe Root has scored 50 international hundreds with 34 coming in Tests and 16 in ODIs.
