WATCH: “Could have continued for longer,” Sanjay Bangar on Virat Kohli’s decision to quit Test captaincy

Virat Kohli stepped down as India's Test captain in January 2022.

Virat Kohli | GettyVirat Kohli stepped down as India’s T20I captain following the T20 World Cup in November 2021 but the selectors sacked him as ODI skipper citing that they don’t want different individuals leading the white-ball teams.

By January 2022, the star batter relinquished the Test captaincy as well after the series loss in South Africa.

Former batting coach Sanjay Bangar believes Kohli should have continued to lead India in red-ball cricket at that time.

"I personally feel that he (Kohli) should have continued slightly for longer as a Test captain,” Bangar said while speaking on 'The Rao Podcast'.

“He probably captained India in 65 Test matches, and one of things I feel is that he could have probably continued as a Test captain for a longer period,” he added.

Virat Kohli finished his tenure as the fourth-most successful captain in Test history. He led India in 68 Tests, registering 40 wins, 17 losses and 11 draws. The highlight of his stint as Test captain was leading India to a series win on Australian soil in 2018-19.

Kohli also holds the record for scoring the most Test runs for India as captain. In 113 innings, he amassed 5864 runs at an average of 54.80 with 20 centuries and 18 fifties.

After Kohli's resignation, Rohit Sharma was named India's skipper across all formats. Both Kohli and Rohit announced their retirement from T20Is after the T20 World Cup triumph two months back.

Subsequently, Suryakumar Yadav was handed the full-time T20I captaincy while Rohit continues to lead the team in ODIs and Test cricket.
