Once hailed as a prodigious talent, Sanju Samson made his India debut in 2015 at the age of 21. For the next five years, he was overlooked in the national side before he finally earned a call-up in 2020.

As of today, Samson has represented India in 16 ODIs and 30 T20Is, amassing more than 900 runs across the white-ball formats with one hundred and five half-centuries.

While Samson has never found a permanent spot in the national team, the top highlight of his career came in June this year as he featured in India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign.

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper acknowledged the same during a recent interview with Zee.

“The last 3-4 months have been the best of my career. Being part of the World Cup team is like a dream come true—something I desired 3-4 years ago. My wish was to play in my last ODI World Cup. However, it was only after joining the team and winning the Twenty20 World Cup that I realised it wasn’t an easy task,” he said.

Samson was part of India’s 15-member squad at the T20 World Cup 2024 but he didn’t get an opportunity in the playing XI as Rishabh Pant was preferred as the first-choice wicketkeeper.

Samson got a chance in the recently held three-T20I series against Sri Lanka. However, he failed to make a mark, returning with a duck on both occasions. “I didn’t perform as expected in the last series against Sri Lanka,” he remarked.

Sanju Samson may not be a regular member of the Indian team, but he enjoys a massive fan following across the country.

Speaking on this topic, the wicketkeeper-batter said, “The support I’ve received from people across the country, as well as from Malayalis from New Zealand to the West Indies, is amazing. Other team members often say that wherever I go, I have incredible support. That’s why they feel disappointed when I don’t make it into the team or when I get out for a duck.”
