England’s white-ball cricket team has had a challenging last one year. They struggled badly at the Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, finishing at the seventh position in the 10-team competition with three wins out of nine matches.

During the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA last month, the Three Lions failed to a make a big mark. While the Jos Buttler-led side qualified for the semis, they managed to defeat only one Test-playing nation, the West Indies, throughout the tournament.

In the wake of multiple debacles, England are looking to shake things up in the coaching department. Current white-ball head coach Matthew Mott will reportedly depart next week.

Reports suggest that England will stick with Buttler as the limited-overs captain. However, Buttler's coach at Rajasthan Royals, Kumar Sangakkara, is likely to take up the head coach role.

According to a report published in The Telegraph UK, Sangakkara could be one of the favourites to replace Mott in charge of England's white-ball outfits.

Having spent a lot of time with Sangakkara at the Royals dressing room in the IPL, Buttler has developed a healthy bond with the Sri Lanka legend.

Other than Sangakkara, former Australia batter Michael Hussey and Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott are also in contention for the high-profile role.

Trott, the ex-England batter, has taken Afghanistan to greater heights in his one-and-a-half-year tenure as head coach, including sixth place in the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup semis.

On the other hand, Hussey also has an impressive CV as a coach. He is long-serving batting coach of the successful IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings and has also served the England team as batting coach between 2022 and 2023.

The report also claims that former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is unlikely to remain in the race for the head coach role.
