Gautam Gambhir was named as the new Team India head coach by BCCI on July 9, 2024. Gambhir will replace Rahul Dravid at the helm, whose tenure ended with India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win.

Gautam Gambhir’s name was unanimously recommended by the Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe, and Sulakshana Naik. His tenure will begin with the away series against Sri Lanka where Team India is set to play 3 ODIs & 3 T20Is starting July 27, 2024.

Apart from Rahul Dravid, the support staff under his tenure, Paras Mhambrey (Bowling Coach), T. Dilip (Fielding Coach), and Vikram Rathour (Batting Coach), were also bid farewell by the BCCI. This confirmed that Gautam Gambhir will bring his own choices as support staff.

It was BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who announced Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as the new Team India head coach and Gambhir quoted his post on X and thanked Jay Shah for his kind words.

Many thanks for your extremely kind words and constant support @JayShah bhai. Elated to be a part of this journey! The entire team together will strive for excellence and newer heights,” Gambhir posted.

Gambhir’s tenure will be three and a half years and will end in December 2027. Gambhir was previously the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise and helped them win the IPL 2024, their third IPL title. KKR’s first two IPL wins came with Gautam Gambhir as captain.

Meanwhile, the Indian cricket fraternity was happy with the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the Indian team's head coach. They took to X and congratulated the former India opener and wished him the best for the future.
