Gautam Gambhir demands separate Indian teams for red and white-ball formats, BCCI accepts - Report

Gambhir will reportedly take over from Dravid after T20 World Cup 2024.

Gautam Gambhir | PTIFormer India cricketer Gautam Gambhir will appear for an interview for the India team head coach position in Mumbai today June 18, 2024. The interview will be conducted by BCCI secretary Jay Shah along with other board officials.

The BCCI has formally accepted applications for the position of India's head coach, with the deadline set for May 27.  According to the job description, the new India men's head coach would oversee all three formats from July 2024 to December 2027.

Dravid's original contract as India's head coach began after the 2021 T20 World Cup in November, expired with the 2023 ODI World Cup at home, and was extended till this year's T20 World Cup.

Gambhir put up a few demands in front of the BCCI for the head coach position such as full command of the team, and separate teams for white-ball and red-ball formats, which IANS understands that the BCCI has already accepted and is keen to appoint him for the role.

"Gauti (Gautam Gambhir) will be traveling today to Mumbai around 12 pm for the interview at BCCI Headquarters. It is almost confirmed that he is going to be the next head coach as the BCCI has agreed to the terms he presented for the head coach. The new head coach of the men's cricket team will soon be revealed. The meeting is scheduled between 2-4 pm,” a source privy to BCCI told IANS.

During a recent event, Gambhir suggested that "there is no bigger honor than coaching the national team".

I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honor than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and those across the globe as well," the 42-year-old had said.

Gambhir was part of India's T20 World Cup winning team in 2007 and the 2011 ODI World Cup side.
