WATCH: “I would love to…,” Sourav Ganguly expresses desire to coach Indian cricket team

Ganguly also endorsed KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir’s name as a potential great coach.

Sourav Ganguly | ANIThe BCCI started its hunt for the head coach of the Indian cricket team in April this year. Rahul Dravid is currently serving as the chief coach and his term expires after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA this month.

With Dravid categorically stating that he will not apply for the job owing to the schedule of the national team, it is certain that the Indian team will have a new coach at the helm post the T20 World Cup 2024.

Meanwhile, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly on Monday (June 3) expressed his desire to coach the national side. He also endorsed KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir’s name as a potential great coach.

"I would love to coach the Indian team. If he wants to do it, I think he will be a very good candidate," Ganguly said while speaking to the media in Kolkata.

Two days ago, Gambhir engaged with students at Medeor Hospital in Abu Dhabi, where a student inquired him about the possibility of coaching the Indian team.

To which, Gambhir replied: “...I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and more across the globe as well and when you represent India, how can it get bigger than that? It is not me that will help India win the World Cup, it is 140 crore Indians who will help India win the World Cup. If everyone starts praying for us and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. The most important thing is to be fearless.”

Gambhir Gambhir recently tasted success as KKR mentor as the franchise defeated SRH in the IPL 2024 final to clinch its third title.

On a separate note, Sourav Ganguly backed wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant and Team India to perform well in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA.

"He (Rishabh Pant) will play well. He is a good player. The World Cup has not yet started, India is playing its warm-up matches. On 5th June, they are playing their first game. They will do well, they are a good side," Ganguly remarked.

India will kick off their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 5.
