Amid rampant speculation over who may succeed Rahul Dravid as Team India Head Coach, former cricketer Harbhajan Singh has expressed interest.  

Harbhajan Singh's comments come in the wake of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opening applications for the position of men’s national team head coach.

Harbhajan revealed that he is yet to apply and is unsure whether he would do it, but he also stated that coaching is about man management rather than teaching players how to play a specific shot.

He also stated that he wants to give back to the game, implying that he may be interested in the position of head coach.

“If given the chance, I would love to give back to cricket, which has given me such an illustrious career. Coaching India is about man management, not teaching players how to drive and pull. They already know that very well. You can offer them guidance,” Harbhajan Singh told ANI.

The BCCI announced last week that they are seeking applicants for the head coach position, with the tenure beginning on July 1, 2024, and ending on December 31, 2027. This period will include the next 50-over Cricket World Cup.

Rahul Dravid’s tenure, who had taken over as head coach in 2021, had come to an end with the ICC World Cup 2023. But the BCCI convinced him to take a six-month extension till the T20 World Cup 2024. However, reportedly Dravid has declined another extension offer from BCCI.

The application deadline for the head coach role is 6 PM IST on May 27, 2024. The BCCI’s selection process will involve reviewing applications, conducting personal interviews, and assessing shortlisted candidates.
