The iconic Wankhede Stadium, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, is reportedly set to host a Test match between India and New Zealand later this year.
The Blackcaps will be traveling for the series in October-November 2024 as part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle. While the Indians are currently on top of the 2023-25 WTC points table, the Kiwis are in 3rd position.
Mumbai hosted five games in the 2023 ODI World Cup but didn't stage a single international game in the 2023-24 international season.
The last Test match which was played at the venue was also between India and New Zealand. India managed to win that Test match by a huge margin of 372 runs, but the encounter was memorable for Kiwi spinner Ajaz Patel, who took 10 wickets in an innings, becoming only the third bowler to achieve this feat in Tests.
For India, Mayank Agarwal starred with scores of 150 and 62 and was given the Player of the Match award. Ravichandran Ashwin had bagged 8 wickets across innings And ultimately it was team India who came out on top.
The dates for the India-New Zealand Test series have yet to be set, but both sides are expected to play in the latter half of the year. The three-match Test series would most likely conclude in November, just before India visits Australia for a five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series.
