IPL 2024: Tweak in IPL Playing Conditions include two bouncers per over, implementation of Smart Replay System

The IPL 2024 season is slated to get underway on March 22.

Bowlers are allowed to bowl two bouncers per over in IPL 2024 | GettyThe Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season will see the bowlers enjoying the luxury of delivering two bouncers in an over. The tweak in the IPL Playing Conditions came after the two-bouncer per over rule was trialed during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023-24 – India's domestic T20 tournament.

It is worth noting here that the bowlers have been allowed to bowl just one bouncer per over so far, with any other delivery that is going above the shoulder height deemed a no-ball. Now, the bowlers can unleash two balls that can bounce above the shoulder of a batter but it has to be within the reach of the batter so that it isn't called a wide.

For the IPL 2024, the BCCI has retained the rule of verifying a catch during the process of stumpings review. This is different from the ICC regulations, where the on-field umpire solely reviews stumping calls.

Akin to last season, the teams will get the privilege of two reviews, along with the ability to review wides and no balls.

Unlike ICC, the BCCI has decided against adopting the stop clock rule and the upcoming IPL won’t have this law, which aims to ensure timely conduct of the proceedings.

Among other changes in the IPL Playing Conditions include the implementation of Smart Replay System. To improve the speed and precision of decision-making, the TV umpire will now receive direct inputs from two operators of the Hawk-Eye system seated alongside him in the same room.

This system will aim to provide comprehensive visual data for accurate assessments. According to ESPNCricinfo, the role of the TV broadcast director, acting as a mediator between the umpire and the Hawk-Eye operators, will become obsolete with this revamped setup.

The IPL 2024 season is slated to get underway on March 22. Defending champions Chennai Super Kings will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the tournament opener at Chepauk.
