Bangladesh pacer Shoriful Islam hogged the headlines with his celebration after claiming the wicket of Sri Lankan batter Avishka Fernando in the first T20I at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Monday (March 4).

Islam mocked the visiting team, especially Angelo Mathews, with his 'timed-out' celebration after dismissing Fernando in the very first over of Sri Lanka’s innings.

Shoriful pitched a delivery outside off and Fernando attempted a drive but only managed to edge it to Litton Das behind the stumps.

Following the wicket, Shoriful roared in ecstasy while leaping in the air. He also tapped on his wrists with a vengeful expression, adding salt to Sri Lanka's old wounds with the 'timed-out' taunt.

Notably, Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews' timed out dismissal against Bangladesh was a topic of debate during the Cricket World Cup in India last year.

After coming to the crease, Mathews was getting ready to face the first ball. However, his helmet strap broke just as he was tightening it around his chin, prompting him to ask for a new one

As the 12th man ran with a helmet, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan had already appealed for a timed out and the Mathews was asked to walk back to the pavilion by the umpires without facing a ball.

The incident had created quite a stir in the cricket fraternity. While many sympathised with Mathews, some felt Shakib was well within his rights to appeal.

Coming to the Sylhet T20I, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Despite losing Fernando (4) cheaply, the tourists went on to rack up a mammoth 206/3 on the board. Sadeera Samarawickrama was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 61 not out off 48 balls while Kusal Mendis (59 off 36) and skipper Charith Asalanka (44* off 21) also made notable contributions with the bat.
